Here I am Again 2/4/04

I don't have too much in the way of news this week as I am just getting back on the bike.
On Tuesday, I went in to the surgeon to be unstapled - so now I am metal-free! He said I could get back on my bike as long as I didn't fall off! I think I'll take his advice, seems sensible to me:) So, on Wednesday after work I dusted off the bike, strapped on the lights and headed off for an hour round Gillard Rd - it was great to be back on the bike.
If the weather holds up I hope to see some of you on Sunday. I guess some of you will be doing the 100k flyer on Saturday. good luck, I hope you all have a great time. If anyone has any tales to tell about the ride email me.
If you have a look on the website, you'll see that Glen Mitchell has given us another story from USA. I'm still looking for more stories from anyone - if you can't think of anything interesting, embellish - use poetic licence.
Speaking of which, who remembers Goat Boy? Kerry O'Keefe was a Sunday regular a few years back. He was a skinny little bugger who loved hill climbing. He got his nickname after a battle up Turkey Hill on the Te Miro Rd. This hill is a particularly nasty little climb halfway round the Te Miro circuit. Kerry and I were battling it out near the top of this climb one Sunday, we were neck and neck with me on the inside and Kerry on the outside, when he suddenly veered off the road toward a goat tethered on the side of the road. It seemed that Kerry, who trained on this road quite regularly forgot he had company and decided to visit his girlfriend - at least that was our theory - so from then on he was known as Goat Boy. We also noticed that sheep would often flee on his approach as well, so we took that as confirmation of his unsavoury habits. Kerry went to Christchurch to train as a pilot and was last seen in Tauranga.
And Turkey Hill got its name when a group of us were grinding up the hill some years ago. A few turkeys were running on the road in front of us - despite our best efforts we couldn't even catch them - beaten by a bunch of turkeys up the hill -pathetic!
I dug this next bit out of my sad gits file. Last year Blyth Andrews had a great idea to get some profiles for some of our members. I received the following from one Sonnie Witana - this would have to be up there in the sad, but true tales. I am sure you will give Sonnie the sympathy he deserves!
If anyone else would like to submit a profile (either for themselves or a friend), email it to me.
